Looking for a little light hearted conversation to get people talking on our community phone lines? Nothing can get people talking like chocolate can. I’m not one of them, but there are people in this world that can’t imagine life without chocolate. This chocolate “thing” doesn’t discriminate between men or women either.

Everyone has an opinion on chocolate, even if they feel like they can take it or leave it, but for real chocolate aficionados there is some dire news circulating the wire these days and it’s that scientists predict chocolate could become extinct by the year 2050.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, due to global warming it is going to be increasingly difficult for the cacao plant to survive. The cacao plant produces seeds that are used to make chocolate and it has a very limited grow range. It can only flourish in rainforests that are approximately 20 degrees north and south of the equator.

Global warming is creating temperatures and droughts in that region that is going to make it increasingly difficult to harvest these beloved cacao plants. The good news is that a major candy stakeholder and UC Berkeley are working on tweaking the DNA of cacao plants so that they can survive and thrive in warmer temperatures.

Does this make you want to run out and stock up on all your favorite candy bars? What will you get your sweetheart on Valentines Day if there is not enough chocolaty goodness to go around? Give a call in to one of our local phone chat-lines and see how other community members feel about the possible chocolate Armageddon that is in our future.

Or if all this talk of that dark, sweet confection has got you wanting a little sugar, call in to a one to one line and treat yourself to a little sexy fun that involves a little chocolate syrup!
